Biologist or bloodhound?

Wednesday, October 28th, 2009

Yesterday, there was a big gizzard shad die-off in Cherry Creek in Denver, and the Colorado Divison of Wildlife, with their usual intelligence and wisdom, declared it to be a natural event based on the color and smell of the water: "The color looks fine. We don't smell anything in the water," DOW District Wildlife Manager Vicki Vargas-Madrid said. And another DOW rep had this to say: A major fish kill that occurred in Cherry Creek in downtown Denver today was a "natural occurring event," according to Jennifer Churchill of the Colorado Division of Wildlife. The fish that died were young gizzard shad, which ...

Lear, Tolstoy and the Fool

Sunday, October 18th, 2009

From Lear, Tolstoy and the Fool by George Orwell (bolded emphasis is mine): A sort of doubt has always hung around the character of Tolstoy, as round the character of Gandhi. He was not a vulgar hypocrite, as some people declared him to be, and he would probably have imposed even greater sacrifices on himself than he did, if he had not been interfered with at every step by the people surrounding him, especially his wife. But on the other hand it is dangerous to take such men as Tolstoy at their disciples' valuation. There is always the possibility - the ...

Shouldn't Schwarzenegger be given "no special treatment" for his former drug use then?

Just Say No!

There was an interview posted a couple of days ago with Senator Tom Carper about the legislative text of the health care reform bills currently being debated in Congress. It's quite enlightening about just how dysfunctional the Congress is. "I don’t expect to actually read the legislative language because reading the legislative language is among the more confusing things I’ve ever read in my life." If legislative language is confusing for a lawmaker, then why is he a legislator?

Now twitter’s a bad thing for NFL

Friday, October 2nd, 2009

According to this Reuters article, the NHL is following in the NFL's and NBA's footsteps of banning players from using social networking before, during, and after the game. That's probably a good idea - I could see quite easily using social networking to set up a gambling ring. MLB already has a policy regarding communication devices prohibiting their use before games. The NFL though, is acting somewhat hypocritical here.  There was a huge marketing campaign with the last SuperBowl that involved Twitter, but now the NFL says ixnay on the tweeting. According to the article, leagues are setting these policies up ...

How do you spell that town down the road?

From Reuters comes this article: "Tire, Lebanon (Reuters) - A protest by Muslim clerics torpedoed a Brazilian samba show in the Lebanese city of Tire on Thursday, local officials said."
